Stress: a very real workplace problem
According to the World Health Organisation, we are in the middle of a stress epidemic which it defines as “the health epidemic of the twenty first century.”
In the UK it is estimated that up to 80% of GP consultations are related to stress.
The Health & Safety Executive (HSE) states on its website that “over 11 million working days are lost each year because of stress. Employers have a legal duty to protect employees from stress at work.”
Other sources suggest that 12.5 million working days have been lost due to work-related stress and anxiety.
They state, “As the levels of anxiety and stress at work continue to rise, it’s not just the mental and physical health of those involved that is being affected – business and organisations are also at risk as stress impacts on their efficiency and profitability, and thereby everyone’s long-term security.”
The above words were written in 2019, when the Corona Virus Pandemic had not entered our world and wreaked its havoc. In some ways, perhaps it has done us a favour. The impact on mental health and emotional wellbeing has been so dramatic that at least it is now discussed frequently and openly and people are being actively encouraged to seek the support and help that is much more readily available.
There is no doubt that the Pandemic and its many lockdowns have taken their toll. Initially, people struggled with being forced to work from home and there was much written about the need for human contact that used to be provided by the workplace. Then the lockdowns ended and the prospect of returning to work also gave some individuals high levels of anxiety. Would they be able to return to that previous way of working? Had they lost their skills? Would they be able to deliver a peak performance once more?
The type of issues and challenges we treat at Crockwood Farm Retreat are as relevant now as they were when we first created the idea of the Retreat in 2019. Take a look below and see if they resonate with you. If there’s anything not shown below that you would like help with, don’t hesitate to get in touch.
